We all know that Incubus is a major promoter of fighting global warming and advocating the protection of our environment. Though I've yet to see any information about this particular event in any Incubus forum or website, I am sure the band has heard about it and would support the cause as well.
Earth Hour is an awesome movement created last year in the Sydney, Australia. The idea of this program was to show that one person can make a difference in this world, no matter how insignificant they think their actions are and how things can change drastically when we all come together (sound familiar?). Luckily, this idea is now being promoted worldwide!
On March 29th, 2008, Earth Hour will be taking effect. It's so simple to participate!
All you have to do is turn your lights off from 8pm-9pm, your local time. It's something small, but trust me, it'll make a big difference!
Now, that's not the only thing you can do. It is encouraged that you change your iridescent lightbulbs to energy-saving flourescent ones. It won't only help stop global warming, but you'll wallet will definitely be thanking you when that electricity bill comes around! Also, it is recommended that you disconnect all your electronics that are not in use (i.e. laptops, stereos, TV's, etc.). You've no idea how much energy those items still take in, even though they're off.
Now, don't think that because there'll be no electricity on, that you'll have to be in the dark!
Visit www.earthhour.org and you'll be surprised at how many things you can still do without the need of electricty!
Of course, we shouldn't let Earth Hour be a once-a-year sort of deal. There are many other things you can do daily to help preserve our environment and it's resources!
(Note: I, myself, have trouble following these at times, especially the vegetarian part. These were all written by a friend of mine, Crys, whom introduced me to not only Jared Leto, but to the idea of preserving and caring for our planet. Much love to her!)
- Recycle! It's so easy now a days to do this, but we mostly shrug it off out of laziness. Trust me when I say, it does make a difference as well!
- Use reusable shopping bags made of 100% recycled material. Not only will you cut the amount of plastic bags used, but you will have a sturdier bag to carry all your groceries! No more dropping your food all over the dirty ground.
- Donate what you don't want anymore. Remember that saying, "One man's trash is another's treasure." Offer it to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Or sell it on eBay and donate the money to a charity of your choice. [*cough*MakeYourselfFoundation*coughcough*]
- Donate in a different fashion. Buy the shamrocks, hearts or other various paper figurines sold by various charities. You can usually find them at your local banks or grocery stores. Any amount makes a difference kids.
- Turn off your lights. Open the windows. Breathe fresh air and take in natural sun rays! Again, Disconnect your computers and tv's. (Screensavers don't save a thing!) Besides, tele pixels are teh suck. (Remember Idiot Box, kids!)
- This one is my personal tragedy. Being a vegetarian. My friend Crys is mega hardcore at this. She doesn't eat ANY type of meat, poultry, eggs, milk or fish. This of course, isn't for everyone, I know that. But I do have to agree that being vegeterian does make you feel much more healthier! (I pulled it off for a month and some weeks before I started struggling again.) If you know you can't live without your meat, at least boycott places (like KFC) that force-feed their animals and inject them with chemicals that are not only bad for the animals but for us as well.
- Buy eco-friendly organic foods and products. I know they can be a bit expensive (my organic make-up is...) but it is worth every penny. If this isn't possible, as the minimum buy products packaged in recyclable material.
- Dump the shampoo. (I still have to try this myself, hehe.) Wash your hair with diluted baking soda, along with a once-a-week apple cider rinse. Not only is it inexpensive and safe, it makes your hair much more prettier! (Credit to Waltz for Venus from OD for this!)
- Take shorter showers! My own personal limit is 5 minutes and I've been keeping up with it pretty good. And no, I don't start smelling until the next day. I do wash!
- Wash your clothes in warm or (preferrably) cold water with a cold rinse. Dry clothes on a line if you can. Save more energy (and money! =D)
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. You do NOT need your water running while your brush, kids. =)
There are limitless things you can do to help conserve the environment and stop it from going to hell. =) These aren't the only options you have! These are pretty much the ones my Jare (it's my nickname for her, haha!) and I have been attempting to keep in practice, her for four months, me for about a month or two.

Sorry about the venison, Nykol,
, but I do love brocolli, cauliflower and carrots too, even just steamed. Yup, yesterday, went well for our family too, even though we weren't home, we were visting relatives with a house full of kids and shut everything down and read stories by candlelight; even the little ones still built their legos! It was wonderful quality time spent.
Just one more tip for you Google enthusiast. Try Googles
blackle.com
it also conserves energy

i'm not vegetarian, i just don't like the taste/texture of meat. i am such a fussy eater. my diet pretty much consists of weetabix, pasta, sweetcorn and rice. aye, it's not healthy. i just don't know what sort of meals to make with vegetables and stuff?
over the last 6 months i have become really good at turning off appliances if i notice they are left on etc. my flatmate always has like every light and socket on. and she washes everything on 90 degree washes grr. i always recycle too even though it means walking 2 miles to the nearest recycle bins! (i live in a big flat complex so we don't have recycling facilities, just one chute/bin for all tyoes of rubbish.

Hey Mistress, I can't help being a carnivore either. We have a family of hunters, so we live off the land like the Indians before us. Of course there are so many other ways we can help. I finally bought those energy saving light bulbs today. I'm looking foward to seeing how they affect our electricity bill.
Wow, sunshineskye, that is amazing! I heard Chicago signed on as one of the cities, also, I heard San Francisco and Atlanta signed on as well. I live in a suburb of Detroit, wish our whole city signed up, but our families and friends are all doing it tonight.
yeah it really isn't...my friends have such a hard time doing it...i sometimes struggle with it too...not because i like meat...cause i just don't really like the taste of it...but because i'm the only vegetarian in my house...so it's sometimes hard to find what to eat...lol...

...how do you do it???...make me feel like i do...how do you do it???...it's better than i ever knew...
Don't sweat it, Mistress_Boyd.
Like I said.
Vegetarianism isn't for everyone. =)

so tonight we drink to youth.
IN CHICAGO WE ARE HAVING FROM 8 PM TO NINE PM A SPECIAL ENERGY SAVING EVENT EVERYONE PLEASE JUST SHUT OFF THE LIGHTS FOR THIS ONE HOUR AND JOIN IN ON THE EVENT TO SAVE ENERGY.
I think last year Incubus gave ten thousand dollars to this animal refuge in California, uh, forgive me for forgetting the name of the place, but a famous female celebrity runs it and I think I saw pictures of that day they went there on MYF foundation website. Check it out, I'm positive about this; I know they really care about animals.
I Am A Vegetarian !
and i feel so good !!
hihiihi
i love animals

I'd have to agree with you on that as well, Hanataro.
I think though, that if we save our environment,
we'll also be saving the various wild life creatures
that inhabit it. Of course, it'd also be kickass to have
some stronger support to animal right's, which is why
I'm going back to being a vegetarian. Slowly but surely,
I'll get there again, haha. (Curse you, buffalo wings!)
But yeah, I'm with hear ya. =)
♥ Kira
Nice board.
But sadly, Incubus needs to do something for the animals.
(I'm more concentraited on the creatures of the wild and housepets)

wow ! thank you so very much !!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing the Earth Hour info, Kira. These ideas not only save the earth, but bring families closer together as they sit in the dark, candlelit evening, perhaps sharing stories or just loving and cuddling one another. My family and I already practice a lot of these save the earth techniques. Can't wait til March 29,
