The more I listen to their lyrics, the more I wonder about what Brandon's philosohpy is. This semester, I decided to take a Philosophy class and you've no idea just how much it's made me stop and reflect about the things I listen to and what I do. Because of this class, I've made myself stop and question even Incubus' message and I've come to realize that because of this, I've fallen even more in love with the music.
If I had to, I think I'd classify Brandon as an existential diest. He believes in a higher being who created the world (What mid-westerners call 'God', I call 'Universe'. http://www.brandonboydbooks.com/blog/threat-of-thought.html). In his song, Circles, he talks about how everything goes around and comes around. It would seem it says that everything is routine, never-ending, to the point of being meaningless. Yet, I would think he agrees with Albert Camus (pronounciation: Ka-moo) that there are still reasons for which to stay alive; reasons that surpass all the meaningless routines of this world.
Brandon has always been one to promote revolution. His songs constantly scream for use to rise against the higher powers, to revolt and become free. In my interpretation, he doesn't only mean it in the political form. I think he means it in a worldly way. We must, like Albert Camus says, revolt against the Universe itself. The Universe, Albert Camus explains, is always, constantly attempting to kill us. There are hundreds of opportunities for us to die in a car crash when we walk out the doors, billions of bacterias and viruses we inhale and/or eat at a daily basis. Everything living is out to get us. Revolting against this idea, this thought that we should die because the Universe wants us to, is what I think Brandon agrees to as well.
Sensations are also a big part of Brandon's lyrics. The simple pleasure of letting your hands travel over your lover's body; the ecstacy an ocean's breeze can bring as you breath in the salty air; the taste of your partner's lips. All of these senses are worth living forth, states Camus and Brandon whole-heartedly agrees. If for nothing else, we keep living in this meaningless world for our senses, for the opportunity to enjoy sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.
Brandon is a lover of reflection. Through his music, he forces us to reflect as well, to see things from a different perspective. Reflection is something else to love in this meaningless world. The simple ability of thinking should make us want to live. The ability to have consciousness should help us keep moving and breathing. The privilege of conjuring our own theories, feelings and ideas, to reminisce our memories, good and bad from our past should push us to fight for survival. Because once you're dead, there's nothing left.
Life is a rare, special, priceless gift. Life is nothing but a mist that can be blown away at any second. Because of this, and for that single reason, it should be cherised, prized to the end and made the most of. Through out all of Brandon's lyrics, this message is the most prevalent. The idea of living, through good and bad, of picking yourself up and enjoying the days anyways, is his main message.
