I just started this one cos most of the active threads revolved around Brandon Boyd and as lovely as he, his hair, his dog Bruce and his girlfriend may be I just figured I'd it'd be nice to talk about Ben Kenney for a bit!

Its for sound purposes. It really DOES change your sound that much when you move people around, because its harder to hear things across the way. But I guess it works since they have Kilmore it makes sense because it would be really hard to hear for Mike the if you were playing right next to Kilmore because they often play close to the same range wise, and it would interfere.
But I guess a lot of bands nowadays can wear earplugs with channels hooked up to the main board so you could hear the end product. That would mess with me hearing the whole band like that. I just want regular earplugs, I can adjust myself man.
But the bassist next to the drum thing is for grooving. Space really messes with you when playing in a tight nit group like that, where all you have to stay together are cues from each other, and the groove laid down by the bass and drums. They HAVE to be tight even if the bass plays a different part than just laying down a walking line, because they are a basis of the band sound.

The bassist normally stands as close to the drummer as possible and since they have kilmore, jose is always off in the corner.

He started out playing guitar for The Roots.
You should check out his solo band if you haven't. He's incredible. He plays drums, bass, guitar, and sings in it.
