Wow. There are soooo many reasons why I love this band. Honestly, I didn't really start getting into them until I was a sophmore in high school. I had just moved to a new school, and I met some of the best friends I will ever have. The next year during November of my junior year, my friends told me that Incubus was coming to the Indiana University auditorium. I was stoked, of course, to see this band that was somewhat new to me, even though they've been around for years. Besides seeing Incubus, the best part of that show was that me and my friends weren't able to buy tickets until we got there and were almost on the stage with Incubus, and the people we were meeting up with bought them in advance and were on the balcony! HA!
After that show, I instantly fell in love and they became my favorite band, period. You know how you hear your favorite song come on the radio, you close your eyes, you feel the song flow through you, and go off into a dream? That's what every single Incubus song does for me. Every note of music played, and every word that is sung sends me into a state of euphoria I never want to leave.
Incubus as a band is incredible, and the members by themselves are just as, if not more amazing. I myself am a visual arts enthusist. I love drawing, painting, sculpting, doodling--name it, I love it. Seeing what Jose and Brandon do just makes me that much more inspired. Brandon's piece titled "Another" is my favorite. I love Brandon's style, and have actually tried conjuring up my own ideas mixed with a bit of his style. I in fact have a tattoo on my back of part of another piece Brandon has done--the hand reaching out of the lotus. The lotus is part of what I have (see picture), and I plan on incorporating my back piece into my sleeve, which will start with "Another." That's how much I love his artwork.
I definitely also have a few choice quotes from some of the songs that I definitely want on me. Many of their lyrics come out and punch me in the face when I hear them. Especially if I'm having a bad day, or a day when I just stop and try to realize what I'm doing with my life, or what's happening around me..."Don't ever let life pass you by," "I suggest we learn to love ourselves before it's made illegal,"Make yourself," "Make a move," "What are you waiting for? A certain shade of green?," and what runs through my head when I'm feeling artsy craftsy is, ""Imagine your brain as a canister filled with ink yeah, now think of your body as the pen where the ink resides Fuse the two; KAPOW! What are you now? You're the human magic marker, won't you please surprise my eyes? It's in your nature, you can paint whatever picture you like no matter what Ted Koppel says on channel 4 tonight So modify this third rock from the sun by painting myriads of pictures with the colors of one I'm sick of painting in black and white my pen is dry, now I'm uptight So sick of limiting myself to fit your definition Picture the scene, where whatever you thought, would, in the blink of an eye, manifest and become illustrated You'd be sure man that every line drawn reflected a life that you loved not an existence that you hated So, must we demonstrate that we can't get it straight? We've painted a picture, now we're drowning in paint Lets figure out what the f*** it's about before the picture we painted chews us up and spits us out I'm sick of painting in black and white my pen is dry, now I'm uptight So sick of limiting myself to fit your definition Redefine." One of my favorite songs of all time.
So all in all, the lyrical and musical talent of this band has had a lot to do with my life. I met my best friends, and was introduced to this incredible band, there are countless good memories I have that involve Incubus playing in the background, they have given me the inspiration I needed to do my best pieces of work, which also is leading up to what I have wanted to accomplish since I was a sophmore in high school--in the next few years, my dream is to become a tattoo artist. When I start listening to Incubus, those are the moments when I feel the most inspired, and when I surprise my own eyes.
Basically, Incubus is the tits. I will be an Incubus fan for life, and it does sadden me that I was not born sooner so I could have enjoyed them at earlier shows. But it doesn't mean I don't enjoy their older music--my absolute favorite cd's are Fungus Amungus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E., but I love all of their cd's and can't wait for the next one!!
